Cannabis and creativity seem to go hand in hand. With overwhelming anecdotal evidence from the many famed creators in our society, cannabis is often described as having played a vital role in their creative careers.
But is it really true? And can Science actually back up the claims?
Popular culture is littered with legendary artists who have used cannabis throughout their lives and often cite it as a vital source of creative inspiration. From Morgan Freeman to Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Hunter S Thompson, and the countless others in between, cannabis has, for centuries, been used by many as a source of creative inspiration.
However, one question remains, does cannabis actually make artists more creative, or are creative people more naturally drawn to experiencing cannabis itself?
There can be little doubt that cannabis users throughout history have explored this intriguing relationship between marijuana and creativity with this subject inspiring countless pieces of music, film and art.
The subject has also caught the attention of scientists and academic researchers who have attempted to prove that there is indeed a correlation between cannabis use and expanded levels of creativity.
What does the Science Say?
Establishing a scientific link between creativity and cannabis is something researchers have attempted, and there is some evidence to back up the anecdotal evidence.
Research conducted in the mid-90s revealed that creativity is associated with the brain’s frontal lobe and that cannabis consumption does increase cerebral blood flow (CBF) to this area, which, in turn, makes it more active.
Published in the Berkeley Medical Journal, the researchers found that CBF increased after cannabis consumption. (These findings were confirmed by further research done in 2002.)
Another study also found that cannabis can increase hyper-priming. This is the brain’s ability to connect two seemingly unrelated items. Merging these two concepts can aid divergent thinking, which is linked to greater levels of creativity.
Unfortunately, while such studies are interesting and offer some evidence of cannabis effects on the brain, the question of whether cannabis truly can increase creativity remains unanswered.
Little has been to analyse the effects of different strains and what impact specific cannabinoids, THC content, and terpenes can have on creativity. Furthermore, it really isn’t easy to either define or monitor the act of creativity.
This is because creativity is typically described or explained in terms of subjective experience, and the scientific means of ‘measuring’ creativity are not especially reliable as Science struggles to truly describe the mechanisms of this phenomenon.
As with most areas of cannabis research, the studies are limited and in their infancy and without any clear conclusions that can solidify the claim that cannabis makes you more creative. However, based on limited research, we can conclude that there are some potential effects which would indicate that cannabis can inspire greater levels of creativity.
What we Know:
Cannabis increases cerebral blood flow, which suggests the potential for increased stimulated creative output.
However, too much THC can actually inhibit creativity, while a smaller amount has been found to help a little.
Cannabis can make less creative people more so but has little effect on those who are already of a creative mindset
There are more creatively advanced people within the population of cannabis consumers compared to those who do not consume cannabis
As with many of cannabis effects, they are not the same for every person and what works for you, might not for someone else.
Cannabis is a unique and remarkable plant and given the art produced by some of those mentioned earlier, it’s fair to say that cannabis has had an enormous impact on popular culture, both today and in the past.
While many of our great artists and creators do consume cannabis, it is still debatable as to whether cannabis opened up their creative juices, or whether that level of creative genius was ultimately, inevitable, irrespective of any cannabis usage.
As we don’t have any concrete evidence to make a firm conclusion, it is perhaps best to rely on your intuition and understanding of your response to the plant. If you are a creative person that swears cannabis boosts your productivity or ability to think “outside the box”, then it probably is very much the case.
Or, if you’re someone looking for a little creative inspiration, there is no harm in experimenting with cannabis to see what might prove beneficial for you. Try different dosages, different strains, change your environment and see what effect it has. You might be surprised by the results.
Luckily, there are plenty of cannabis strains that are hugely popular with creative people who will resolutely attest to their efficacy and ability to help inspire greater creative outputs.
Understanding how cannabis affects you and what cannabis strains are best for creativity could potentially help you to tap into areas of your mind that had, until this point, gone previously undiscovered. Whether it´s an indica-dominant hybrid or an uplifting, euphoric sativa-dominant strain, cannabis offers a range of different effects that can vary from person to person.
Ultimately, the only way to truly understand the level at which cannabis can affect your levels of creativity is to consume it and observe the results.
