An increasing number of people globally are advocating the use of CBD oil for a range of different ailments – from Parkinson’s to chronic pain to reducing anxiety to varying forms of epilepsy.. This is not all hearsay either; Scientific studies have also suggested that CBD could be hugely beneficial for a wide range of conditions.

What are CBD oils?

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two of the most well-known cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. They are naturally occurring compounds, typically found in the resinous flower of the cannabis plant, which has been used as a medicine for thousands of years.

CBD, unlike its more famous counterpart, is not psychotropic – meaning it doesn’t induce the ‘high’ sensation that THC is so well known for. They are two completely separate chemical compounds, however, there remains some pre-existing stigma surrounding CBD as people continue to confuse CBD for THC.

Good quality, pure CBD oil contains only trace amounts of THC and will therefore not make the user feel ‘high’. The best CBD oil products are those that provide a full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes, which act in synergy (known as the Entourage Effect), to produce the best possible healing effect. This variety is often called ‘full-spectrum CBD oil’.

There are two different types – CBD oil and CBD hemp oil. Now, while the finished product can be virtually identical, it is the source of origin that differentiates them.

CBD oil vs CBD hemp oil

CBD hemp oil is always produced from the hemp plant and can be produced from regular cannabis sativa or indica plants.

Hemp plants are defined as cannabis plants that contain only minute amounts of THC (typically under 0.3%). This means hemp oil extractions are virtually THC free and as such, offer no psychoactive effects.

There are two types of oil made from hemp:

  • Hemp oil – extracted from the stem, leaves or flowers of the hemp plant, for its CBD content along with other vitamins and compounds. For it to be legal, it must contain less than 0.3% THC.
  • Hemp seed oil – extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. This variety is more often used for cooking, and rarely contains any CBD

CBD oil (which also encompasses CBD hemp oil) can come from any cannabis plant. If it is not extracted from a hemp plant, it can contain varying quantities of THC, depending on the purpose of the extraction.

How do CBD oils work?

CBD works by stimulating the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body, primarily by interacting with the CB1 and CB2 receptors. It is through the stimulation of these receptors that the beneficial qualities of CBD oils come into play. The endocannabinoid system is the primary regulator of many bodily functions, and therefore is essential when thinking about treating specific disorders.

The list of ailments CBD is thought to be effective treating is a long one. CBD oils are reportedly antiemetic, anticonvulsant, antipsychotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumoral and antidepressants. To put that in plain English – the potential benefits of CBD oils are: reducing nausea & vomiting, suppressing seizure activity, pain management, combating anxiety, depression, psychosis, neurodegenerative and inflammatory disorders and fighting tumour and cancer cells. This natural extract is, therefore, it is said to be an effective treatment for a wide range of diseases.

CBD oils are usually ingested orally. Users claim a daily dose of a few drops under the tongue is the quickest and most effective method of ingestion. Other users prefer to swallow it more discreetly, in food or drink. We would recommend taking 2 or 3 drops, three times a day for maximum efficacy.

How is CBD oil produced?

CBD oils are a CBD extract usually taken from a cannabis plant’s resin. The marijuana plant has the most resin glands (known as trichomes) on the buds, leaves and flowers – making these parts most suitable for extracting CBD oil.

There are four main ways to extract CBD oil: C02 extraction, Dry Ice extraction, Olive Oil extraction and Solvent extraction.

However, most of the best brands tend to use a CO2 extraction method due to the efficiency of the technique and the safety and quality of the final product.

A solvent, such as carbon dioxide or a pure form of alcohol (like ethanol), is used to extract the oils from the plant. Neurotoxic solvents like butane and hexane are not recommended as they can leave toxic residues that compromise immune function and impede healing – reducing the health and wellness effects of CBD products.

We would always recommend CO2 extraction when looking to buy high-quality CBD products. This method can be divided into three categories – supercritical (the most common), subcritical and mid-critical.

CO2 extraction is a clean process that results in a high-quality, pharmaceutical-grade product – as CO2 acts as a purifier leading to extended shelf life periods of the final product.

CBD Continues to Grow

Several celebrities publicly advocate the health benefits of CBD oils on the human body, using them for their own medical condition. Michael J. Fox is perhaps the most well known, using CBD oils to treat his Parkinson’s disease. Morgan Freeman is another famous advocate, using CBD oils to treat fibromyalgia and arthritis pain.

Across the world, celebrities and ordinary people alike are rallying up massive support for CBD oils – so much so that oil is legal for medicinal use now in many countries. Health care professionals are starting to include it in their medical advice and prescribe it for several ailments including anxiety, depression and chronic pain. Even Thailand, once known for its severe drug penalties have now made CBD oil legal for medicinal use.

As the planet begins to wake up to the wondrous potential of cannabis, we can expect to see this particular cannabis component, continue to take the world by storm.
