Cannabis has changed a lot in recent years. While the classic stereotype or stigma of the lazy cannabis stoner is slowly beginning to fade, there still continues to be plenty of misunderstandings and misinformation regarding the actual effects of this truly versatile plant.

Perhaps you grew up thinking that cannabis would make you lazy or that it would stifle your energy and lead to a life of ruin. Maybe you heard that cannabis was used by those with a daily routine of watching day-time TV and “cooking” microwavable pizza.

Thankfully, times change. And so has cannabis and our understanding of its extensive variety of potential applications and effects.

While many people still associate marijuana usage with relaxation and taking it easy, many cannabis consumers use the plant to help boost their productivity. Indeed, certain strains can actually help with medical issues such as fatigue or ADD with energizing strains becoming increasingly popular in dispensaries amongst both medical and recreational users.

Using incredibly sophisticated breeding techniques, breeders have been able to develop a whole new line of cannabis hybrid strains that have been tailored to offer specific effects and medical applications.

And while the evolution of the cannabis hybrid has resulted in a whole raft of potential medical applications, that stigma of the lazy cannabis smoker refuses to die in some parts. However, the reality is that there are now hundreds, if not thousands of cannabis strains that are actually capable of raising energy levels and promoting greater levels of both creativity, and activity, in contrast to those lazy stigmas of by-gone eras.

Of course, there are plenty of strains also designed to aid in relaxation, but thankfully, cannabis now offers so much more than the one-size-fits-all approach of past generations.

So how is it that cannabis can help provide that much desired, uplifting, boost of energy?

Indica vs Sativa and so Much More

It has been suggested for many years that so-called “indica” strains will provide relaxing effects while “sativa” strains are said to be conducive to an energy boost. While there is some truth in this theory, it does not sufficiently explain the whole marijuana story.

While our full understanding of the cannabis plant is not yet complete, we now know that the effects of a particular cannabis strain are affected by much more than whether it is recognised as an indica or sativa strain.

Indeed, it is now thought that each strain offers varying effects because of the unique blend of aromatic compounds, terpenes, and specific cannabinoids present within a particular strain of cannabis.

Typically, most sativa-dominant hybrid strains will contain terpenes that can provide an invigorating cerebral high and energy boost. In contrast, many indica-dominant strains will offer more terpenes that cause a sedating, relaxing effect. However, not every indica-dominant strain will relax and not every sativa-dominant strain will provide a boost of energy.

Many of our most popular strains can give consumers a motivational high or a euphoric burst of energy that can inspire greater levels of energy and creativity. Whether you´ve got a stack of dishes 10 feet tall or a last-minute essay due on the folly of procrastination, certain cannabis strains can induce a burst of much-needed energy that can provide you with the necessary inspiration you´ve been lacking.

Don´t forget about THC and CBD

While the terpene profile of a strain is a determining factor in its ability to lift energy, high in THC levels strains can also be highly euphoric and offer energising cerebral effects, but be warned that some high in THC strains can actually cause sleepiness and “fog head”.

As such, a little trial and error could be required – Remember, cannabis has different effects on different people, and while some strains are favoured by many for energy, that very same strain could cause you to feel more relaxed and sedated.

In addition, High-CBD strains or balanced CBD/THC marijuana strains typically contain much lower levels of THC content, meaning that the effects are often much less intense or even without a detectable effect. As such, if you´re looking for some clear-headed stress relief, a strain with little to no THC could also prove beneficial when using cannabis for energy.

Don´t be Afraid to Experiment!

Ultimately, finding a strain that boasts a high energy terpene profile, including limonene and caryophyllene is your best bet to finding a cannabis strain that can provide you with that much sought-after burst of energy.

However, with so many strains boasting unique and variable effects, it is worth experimenting with different strains to discover what could be your perfect strain. For those with less experience, a classic Jack Herer or Super Silver Haze strain can offer uplifting effects while veteran cannabis consumers might enjoy a hard-hitting, highly energising and somewhat infamous, Green Crack.
