Cannabis can reduce the feelings of nausea and vomiting, which is especially helpful for patients undergoing chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS medication treatment and those suffering from gastrointestinal disorders like Crohn’s Disease. It is now known that the cannabinoid receptors CB-1 and CB-2 in the Gastro-Intestinal tract (GI) are responsible for feelings of nausea and that a system called 5-HT is involved in producing the vomiting reflex.

The cannabinoids THC and CBD work together (through the Entourage Effect) by acting on the CB-1/CB-2 to control and reduce nausea and reduces the functionality of the 5-HT system. The terpene linalool also seems to reduce nausea and vomiting by acting on the 5-HT system, specifically by inhibiting the 5-HT3 receptor.

We are all familiar with the stomach-turning perils of nausea and vomiting. Most people have experienced a bad hangover, a stomach bug, motion sickness, or a form of medication that can cause nausea. Of course, some people suffer from more severe nausea including chemotherapy-induced nausea and Gastrointestinal Disorders.

Chronic pain, anxiety, ulcers, and gallbladder disease are other frequent causes of severe nausea while pregnant women often experience a particularly harsh form of nausea.

But did you know that plain old regular cannabis can be used to treat nausea?

Yes, believe it or not, several studies have indicated that medical marijuana can be useful in helping to combat nausea and vomiting.

Studies have shown that cannabis has been shown to possess a powerful antiemetic effect – helping to reduce nausea significantly. Additionally, medical cannabis comes without the many nasty side-effects of pharmaceutical antiemetics that help to cause nausea.

The Science Behind the Effect of Medical Cannabis on Nausea

Given the growing evidence of cannabis efficacy as a treatment for nausea, several medical professionals now advocate using the antiemetic properties of cannabis to treat nausea – but how does it work?

Well, a growing body of science using both Human and animal test subjects have shown that manipulation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) can successfully prevent nausea. It is now known that the cannabinoid receptors CB-1 and CB-2 in the Gastrointestinal system are responsible for the feelings of nausea. A system called 5-HT is involved in producing the vomiting reflex.

There is evidence to suggest that medical marijuana allows the CB-1 or 5HT-1A antagonism to dominate. Thus, manipulating the endocannabinoid system with cannabinoids like CBD and THC is now thought to be highly effective for treating nausea.

The cannabinoids THC and CBD work together, with a few terpenes (through the Entourage effect), by acting on both types of cannabinoid receptors and reducing the functionality of the 5-HT system. This, in turn, helps to reduce the symptoms of chronic and severe nausea.

The Linalool terpene also seems to reduce nausea and vomiting by acting on the 5-HT system – specifically by inhibiting the 5-HT3 receptor. The Limonene terpene is also known to prevent nausea and anxiety as well as reducing gastric reflux and heartburn.

While many people continue to use the indica/sativa binary model when discussing the effects of cannabis, the variety of cannabinoids and terpenes present in a strain seems to hold the answer as to why different strains have varying effects on specific conditions.
