Cannabis can help to reduce the symptoms of Fibromyalgia by reducing chronic pain (the main symptom of the disease) throughout the body, but also by alleviating the side effects of the disease. These side effects usually include muscle stiffness, fatigue, insomnia and depression.

It has been shown that cannabis can help with all of these symptoms through the workings of the cannabinoids THC and CBD. Specifically, THC is known to have pain-relieving and energy-boosting effects.

While CBD helps THC in this process, it also helps to relax stiff muscles, promotes a healthy sleep cycle and aids with depression. The effect of both cannabinoids is intensified – through the Entourage Effect – by the terpenes linalool and myrcene, who in their own right also have pain-relieving and sleep-promoting properties. Similarly, the terpene limonene seems to enhance CBD’s antidepressant effect.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain that is typically accompanied by related issues with fatigue, muscle spasms, sleep, memory and mood.

Today, the available forms of treatment for the condition include several prescription drugs, including pain killers, antidepressants, and anti-seizure medications. However, these forms of treating Fibromyalgia are not without their side effects.

For this reason, patients are considering other alternatives including cannabis for Fibromyalgia as they look for a real and long-lasting reduction in pain.

Medicinal Cannabis For Fibromyalgia

Researchers are now of the opinion that the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, such as chronic pain can be improved with medical marijuana. The National Academies Press released a review in 2017 on the effects of cannabis, including its potentially therapeutic benefits.

The review presented substantial evidence to suggest that cannabis was particularly effective in reducing pain. The analysis also concluded that some evidence exists regarding the potential of cannabis products in improving sleep management for Fibromyalgia patients.

Back in 2011, a study was conducted involving 28 people suffering from Fibromyalgia. About 43 per cent of the patients who consumed cannabis identified some pain relief while another 43 per cent reported experiencing strong levels of pain relief.

More studies are, of course, necessary to determine medical cannabis effectiveness in treating Fibromyalgia. However, several clinical studies show promising outcomes for patients with Fibromyalgia from using THC for safe and effective treatment.

In addition, several anecdotal reports also suggest that cannabis consumption may help to reduce some of the symptoms associated with the condition. With these studies in mind and the growing anecdotal evidence, it is clear that there is a strong potential for medical cannabis to reduce the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia.

With such a dramatic increase in our understanding of the benefits of cannabis, so many more people are now considering medical cannabis to treat fibromyalgia pain and a myriad of other health conditions.

CBD Could Be The Key

And it’s not just cannabis. A growing body of research on the benefits of hemp CBD has revealed some serious potential in using CBD for Fibromyalgia.

In 2015, a review analyzing a variety of research papers on CBD usage for chronic pain (although not specifically pain associated with fibromyalgia) concluded that 7 of the 11 studies included in the review demonstrated that CBD did relieve pain.

More recently, in 2017, a study also concluded that hemp CBD could help to counteract the hypersensitivity of cells surrounding nerves in people with chronic pain syndromes, including those with fibromyalgia.

Given this growing evidence and the increased levels of research for cannabis efficacy, it would certainly appear that there are genuine benefits of cannabis and medical marijuana for fibromyalgia, but what are the best cannabis strains for fibromyalgia?

From what we now know, there is a strong indication that some of the best strains for fibromyalgia include higher levels of CBD content. With CBD´s remarkable interaction with the Endocannabinoid System now being more understood, it is easy to see why more and more people are choosing CBD oils and medical marijuana for fibromyalgia over more conventional treatment methods.

Many cannabis strains are available for fibromyalgia patients looking to treat chronic pain so if you´ve been thinking growing your own medicinal cannabis; we have picked out 3 of the best cannabis strains that are considered to be beneficial as a treatment for fibromyalgia and other chronic pain syndromes.

Harlequin

Harlequin is a sativa dominant hybrid strain that has a higher than normal CBD content and far less THC than in most modern-day strains.

With a CBD content ranging between 10 to 15%, Harlequin is recommended for medical use, and as it contains a low THC content (around 7%), it is unlikely to provide any psychoactive effects.

A descendant of Colombian Gold (a famed indica from Nepal) and Thai and Swiss landrace strains, Harlequin provides plenty of clear-headed sativa effects that could help to relieve fibromyalgia symptoms.

This increasingly popular medical strain doesn’t cause the psychoactive effects associated with a high THC strain. This allows users to enjoy their day without the added euphoria or sedating effects that some consumers want to avoid.

Indeed, Harlequin is favoured by many because of its ability to relax without sedation, to treat muscle spasms and to relieve pain without any intoxicating effects.  Harlequin´s most prominent terpenes include myrcene that helps to generate these strains herbal, almost woody, piney flavours.

As a strain for treating chronic pain, Harlequin is thought to be one of the most effective available today.

Cannatonic

Another high in CBD strain, Cannatonic is favoured by many looking to relieve fibromyalgia symptoms.

Cannatonic is a unique hybrid strain explicitly bred to be low in THC and high in CBD. This cross between a female MK Ultra and a famous G13 Haze male produces a mellow high that thanks to its high CBD content (around 10%), is both uplifting and relaxing,

If you’re new to cannabis and you´re suffering from fibromyalgia, this CBD-dominant strain could prove an ideal choice, particularly If you’re sensitive to the psychoactive effects of high in THC content strains. With a THC count of just 5%, Cannatonic is not going to induce any psychoactive effects.

The medicinal strain has a distinctly earthy, almost citrus-like scent that is the result of the terpenes linalool and myrcene.

Cannatonic is often used by people with fibromyalgia and chronic pain as it can help with reducing pain, muscle spasms, anxiety, migraines, as well as other physiological and psychological symptoms.  As we mentioned earlier, high in CBD strains are thought to be particularly useful for people with fibromyalgia.

Girl Scout Cookies

One of the most popular cannabis strains available today, Girl Scout Cookies (or GSC) has made a huge splash in both the recreational and medicinal cannabis markets over the last two decades.

A cross of OG Kush and Durban Poison, this remarkable marijuana strain belongs to the family of indica strains and its high levels of THC (around 20%) make this an ideal strain for reducing pain, particularly, fibromyalgia pain and joint pains.

Patients favour this deliciously sweet multiple award-winning indica dominant hybrid strain for fibromyalgia because of its potency, sedative effect and ability to relieve pain.

Girl Scout Cookies consumers describe this potent strain as offering happiness, relaxation, reduction in pain, creativity and euphoria. The strain is also thought to be effective when used to improve sleep.

GSC´s known terpenes include linalool, myrcene and pinene which lend itself to the sweet, pungent cookie-like flavour offered up this incredible high in THC strain.

Indeed, Girl Scout Cookies is considered by many to be one of the best cannabis strains available for pain.

With increased levels of research now focussing on cannabis pain-relieving qualities, there seems to be real value in considering cannabis as an effective treatment for fibromyalgia.
