Cannabis indica is a type of cannabis species, thought to originate from the Asian subcontinent, most likely in Afghanistan. Having collected plant specimens in India, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, the first European botanist to classify this type of cannabis variety, named the plant Cannabis indica, in recognition of the roots of its discovery.

Whether indica cannabis and sativa cannabis are genuinely separate species of plants is a matter of debate, but as any cannabis consumer will tell you, there are many traits and characteristics that exist within each type of plant.

If you´re looking to buy indica seeds, in this section, Marijuana Grow Shop explains how to grow cannabis indica seeds and their unique characteristics that distinguish these marijuana seeds from sativa cannabis and hybrid seeds.

Typical Traits of an Indica Cannabis Seed

What we do know about pure indica marijuana seeds is that they typically produce large amounts of THC. The higher concentrations of THC provide euphoric and intoxicating effects making it popular for use as both recreational and medical marijuana.

Beyond high THC levels, several traits distinguish pure indica seeds from other seed types:

  • Shorter flowering time
  • High yields
  • Effects: Sedating, relaxing, evening
  • Potential symptom relief: Anxiety, pain, insomnia, muscle spasms
  • Morphology: Short, bushy, broader leaves

One of the clearest indications that you have an indica plant on your hands are short and wide leaves that produce an intense dark colour and can already be seen once the plants are about a 10-20cm above the ground.

Another indicator of indica is when the branches start to grow upwards and gain strength to support the weight of the buds on the tips of the plant, once it begins flowering. If instead, they begin to grow out sideways, rather than upwards, it is possible they would snap through the middle due to the weight of the buds on the ends of the branches.

Indeed, some indica marijuana seeds like the legendary Northern Lights tend to grow wide near the bottom of the plant. As such, it is necessary to train those lower branches to prevent any possible breakage once the plant begins the flowering process. This type of strain is considered ideal for growing indoors using the SCRoG method.

How to Grow Indica Cannabis Seeds?

Because of the rapìd growing cycle offered by pure indica seeds, as well as their short stature, they are quite convenient for home growers who are limited in the amount of time or space they have available. With thick trunks that are capable of supporting branches with impressively hefty buds, these typically compact plants with a smaller stature make it possible to fit several plants in a small grow area.

Even when grown outdoors, indica marijuana strains are resilient while their fast flowering time means that outdoor growers can harvest before the onset of Winter. Typically reasonably easy to grow, pure indica strains don´t usually require professional treatment and can produce high-yielding harvests, even for those with little to no cannabis growing experience.

While it is common for indica strain types to develop into a Christmas tree-like shape, this growth can be tamed and manipulated to even out the canopy and direct more light to all of the available budding sites. Cultivation techniques like basic LST (low-stress training) and topping can be used to provide your plant with the ideal shape for robust health and maximum yields.

Once you’re happy with how it looks, you can switch your vegging plant to the flowering phase by reducing the light hours inside to 12 hours on, 12 hours off. When reaching the flowering period, indica plants will double, or even triple in size with most strains concluding their flowering after 8-10 weeks.

However, one potential issue with indica strains is also, somewhat ironically, one of their greatest strengths – Densely packed buds. As indica buds grow in size and gain weight, they develop a far higher risk of developing mould, particularly in humid areas where the climate can attract pests and pathogens.

You can help to avoid this issue by carefully monitoring the environmental conditions when growing indoors, or by using necessary shelter outside (in case of rain, excess humidity, etc.). As such, access to a small greenhouse or shed where you can hide your plants can be a great safety net.

Benefits of Growing Indica Cannabis Seeds

One of the primary benefits of indica cannabis strain types is that they will flower quickly when grown in an outdoor environment, generally finishing around the beginning of September.

Compared to sativa seed types, cannabis indica seeds have shorter flowering periods which means that the plants mature and finish growing more rapidly. As such, this allows outdoor gardens to flourish in climates where Autumn quickly turns to Winter. For those looking to grow cannabis indoors, this means more annual cycles.

Additionally, the benefit of growing indica strains is their typically short stature which is ideal for most gardens, either indoors or outdoors or where space is limited and direct sunlight is a priority.

Because of their naturally high resin production levels, pure indica plants can also be used to produce hash. With some pure indica plants, you will find that the plant is virtually covered in resin, even within the leaves and stems. As such, it is possible to get impressive extractions from the leave and stems of pure indica plants, while using the buds would generate remarkably high levels of THC.

The best seed banks offer cannabis indica strains in all seed types, and with a huge collection of indicas and sativas available in regular seeds, autoflowering seeds and feminized marijuana seeds form, Marijuana Grow Shop has set the bar even higher. Indeed, with our truly impressive seeds collection of the purest indicas and sativas, including legendary high in THC cannabis strains like the award-winning, pure indica seed Northern Lights, or the cult classic cup winner, White Widow.
