Having first legalised the use of medicinal cannabis in 2012, Illinois became the eleventh and latest U.S state to introduce legalised recreational cannabis in January of 2020.
Having introduced the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act in 2019, Illinois became the first state to legalize marijuana sales by an act of state legislature, as opposed to the by voter initiatives that we have seen in other legalised states.
However, as with other states where cannabis is no longer prohibited, rules and regulations on both possession and cultivation do vary.
Let’s take a closer look at Illinois´s recently updated marijuana laws.

With the passing of the new law, possession limits for adults over the age of 21 are:
- Up to 30 grams of cannabis flower
- Up to 500 milligrams of THC in cannabis-infused products
