Green Smoothie with a Cannabis Twist

By Sylvester

From wheatgrass to spinach, everyone seems to agree that a green smoothie is the healthiest sort around. Well, if you want to bump up the healthful qualities to uber-healthy levels, add raw cannabis leaves and trim to the mix and give yourself a healthy, morning energy buzz, without the high.

Not to be mistaken for a ´get you high as a kite´ edibles recipe; this is a green smoothie with a non-psychoactive twist. Raw vegetables are known to retain more of their nutritional value than cooked ones. And more of their flavor too. Green smoothies are often touted as a great way to give your body a vitamin enriched boost, for energy, glowing hair and skin etc.

Now, there is mounting interest, both layman and scientific, into the potential of raw cannabis consumption for boosting your health too. The cannabinoids THCA and CBDA are found in abundance in raw cannabis. When heated these become THC and CBD but, if you forego the decarboxylation, then you can still benefit from the healthy properties of the former, without getting high.

THCA and CBDA are thought to have potential both as anti-inflammatories and for giving a boost to the immune system. Green smoothies with ingredients like avocados and spinach are already full of antioxidants, fibre and vitamins, so this is like the big sister version of one of those. For those of you with a sweeter tooth, there’s a fruity alternative at the bottom too.

Green Smoothie with cannabis leaves recipe:

  • Fresh cannabis trim and leaves, up to 15 gr
  • A big handful of fresh spinach leaves
  • A small avocado
  • Approx 600 ml Apple juice
  • A good chunk of cucumber
  • A pinch of ginger
  • A squeeze of lemon or lime juice
  • A handful of blueberries or raspberries
  • Optional extras: a pinch of hemp seed, mango.

Make sure your leaves and trim are clean and rinsed. Whack it all in the blender and whizz! Till the leaves are mere green dots in the mix. You will need to blend for quite a while, and possibly want to pass it through a sieve, to get a nice smooth consistency. The fresher the leaves/trim the more beneficial and flavorsome the results. A cannabis green or fruit smoothie won’t get you high but should leave you feeling, good and energetic.

Fruity cannabis smoothie recipe:

  • Fresh cannabis trim and leaves, up to 15 gr
  • ½ litre of coconut or full fat milk, almond, soy or hemp seed milk work well too
  • Soft fruits to taste: raspberries, blueberries, strawberries – all go well together, solo, or with banana.
  • A tablespoon of honey or agave syrup.
  • Ice

If you should want to enjoy a smoothie as a way of getting high, then use decarboxylated bud in the fruit smoothie instead of (or as well as!) the trim.

Heat your preferred dose in the milk first, the THC binds with the cow milk (THC needs fatty liquids to bind with), add cream for added fat to boost the effect of the THC further. MAKE SURE IT DOESN’T BOIL! That tastes disgusting ; ) A nice, gradual simmer is the way to go. Simmer for an hour, to an hour and a half.

Drain out any residual grinds then cool, when you blend in the fruit, add ice to the mixture so your smoothie is real cold.

This version comes with that edible warning for novices – know thy dose, the high from edibles can be stronger and will last a lot longer than smoking or vaping!
